Mark Levine has been at the forefront of advocating for more affordable, equitable and healthy communities for nearly 25 years. He’s a former bilingual math and science teacher in the South Bronx, and he founded the Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union, which today has made over $100 million of loans to local families and businesses in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. He served on the New York City Council for 8 years, including as Chair of the Committee on Parks, Chair of the Jewish Caucus, and Chair of the Committee on Health, where he brought his science-based and data driven approach to helping to lead the city out of the worst public health crisis in a century. He introduced and passed transformative tenants rights protections, including the first-in-the-nation Right to Counsel, which guarantees tenants at risk of eviction with legal representation if they cannot afford a lawyer.&nbsp; In 2022, Mark was elected Manhattan Borough President, where he led the fight to end our affordability crisis. He identified opportunities for tens of thousands of new units of housing, advocated for new policies that will help create badly needed affordable housing, and fought to protect tenants so they can stay in their homes. He has launched campaigns to plant a million more trees and deliver millions of dollars of low-interest loans to small businesses, and has pushed the city to improve our mental health system, ensure New Yorkers can travel quickly and safely on our streets, and prepare for climate change.&nbsp; Mark lives in Upper Manhattan with his wife and two kids, who are studying to be a nurse and EMT. In his free time, Mark spends time with his family and likes to study languages. He speaks Spanish and Hebrew fluently, and is studying Greek and French.

New Yorkers of every income level need to be able to raise their families, retire with dignity, and prosper in neighborhoods across the five boroughs. But we’re in the middle of the worst housing crisis in NYC history, and we need to take immediate action to lower skyrocketing rents and make the City affordable. Mark Levine has been fighting to address this crisis for years, helping to create thousands of residential&nbsp;units in Manhattan, reforming outdated zoning laws, and identifying opportunities for tens of thousands of new homes. He passed landmark tenant protections, including the first-in-the-nation Right to Counsel legislation, which guarantees legal representation to tenants in housing court and has helped countless New Yorkers avoid eviction and stay in their homes. As Comptroller, Mark will fight for a more affordable City by ensuring we adequately fund and develop affordable housing so that New York and everyone lucky enough to call it home can continue to thrive.

Solving our Housing Crisis

New Yorkers deserve neighborhoods that feel safe. And that can only happen with leadership that is policy-focused, detail-oriented, and collaborative. As Comptroller, Mark will invest in programs that will make us safer while also investing in fair and effective community policing in every precinct. He will use the powers of the office to improve efficiency within the NYPD and get more officers patrolling our streets, where they can build relationships to ensure our neighborhoods are safe.

Improving public safety

Every child – regardless of zip code – deserves a gold-standard public education in New York. As a former Bronx teacher and public school parent, Mark understands both how sacred that promise is and how far our schools are from keeping it. As Comptroller, Mark will work with families, school principals, and Superintendents to reverse enrollment declines that threaten our public school system, take steps to ensure that every student is getting access to the programs and support they are entitled to, and fight to vastly expand our city’s early childcare infrastructure to ensure that every child has access to affordable care.

Ensuring access to a good education

With the uncertainty that Trump’s second term brings, New Yorkers need to be able to rely on their local government to efficiently serve and support them. Yet much of our city government relies on outdated technology and obsolete processes, making critical services and resources harder to access by those who need them most.As Comptroller, Mark will bring the city government into the 21st century and modernize city agencies by auditing outdated processes, updating tech policies, and enabling innovation. From speeding up affordable housing approvals to enrolling residents in programs like SNAP, a streamlined government can improve lives, meet the everyday needs of our neighbors, and fill the holes that the Trump administration will leave.

Modernizing government

New York is known for its grit, and New Yorkers for our resilience. But recently, quality of life has declined, especially for middle-class and working families. Streets feel dirtier, neighborhoods louder, sidewalks more obstructed, and commutes longer. Life in New York doesn’t have to be this hard.From improving green spaces and tackling noise complaints, to addressing sanitation issues and taking down years-old scaffolding, Mark has long tackled issues that impacted the quality of daily life for us all. As Comptroller, he will use the office’s oversight powers to ensure the government is addressing the everyday challenges across every community.

Improving your quality of life

Every New Yorker should have access to the healthcare they need, from mental healthcare to preventive care. Yet whether because it’s unaffordable or inaccessible, for too many of our neighbors, the care they need is simply out of reach. Mark served as the Chair of the Council’s Health Committee, where he helped lead the city through the worst days of the pandemic by providing clear, science-based information to New Yorkers when they most needed it. As Borough President, he worked to help people in need of behavioral healthcare get the support they need, including creating over 800 new in-patient psychiatric care beds. As Comptroller, Mark will work to ensure that every neighborhood has local access to affordable, high quality healthcare. We must fight to keep vitally important, community hospitals open, hold private hospital systems accountable, and address the root causes of long emergency room wait times and emergency response times.

Accessing affordable healthcare

We used to measure time in a “New York minute,” but whether you’re waiting on MTA delays, stuck in traffic, or trying to walk or bike to your destination, traveling around the City safely and quickly is increasingly hard. And that holds us all back.Mark has fought to improve subway reliability and accessibility; deploy safety infrastructure on subway platforms; make our sidewalks safer; invest in infrastructure so that cyclists, motorists and pedestrians can safely share the road; and reduce congestion so that our buses, emergency vehicles and other users of the street can travel safely. As Comptroller, Mark will continue to make it easier for New Yorkers to get where they’re going, no matter the time of day or distance they need to travel.
